Are you working on your book? Have you finished writing and are preparing to submit to agents? Or have you submitted and want to know what the process is now? Don’t miss this informative class with Simon Winder, publishing director at Penguin Random House and bestselling author.
This two-hour masterclass will equip you with an understanding of how the publishing industry works as a whole – and teach you how to get the most out of it, both before and after you’ve got yourself a publisher. You will gain a strong sense of what publishers and agents are looking for in submissions, and how to maximize your chances of getting published. You will learn how to avoid the typical mistakes made by writers – and how best to catch the eye of an agent or publisher.
The masterclass is small and personal – just ten writers including you – allowing you a genuine opportunity to learn about and discuss the industry and the publishing process with one of its heavyweights. Simon will cover everything, from the general industry to what happens during the publishing process: What are publishers looking for in a submission? What makes them want to publish a book, and what puts them off? How do you ensure that all the time and hard work you put into your submission is as focused and efficient as possible? How does the industry work, and what does a writer need to know to get the most out of it? And – once you’ve bagged yourself a publisher – what can you expect from the process?
Not only that – four people will have the invaluable opportunity to receive one-to-one, practical feedback on their pitch or cover letter in a personal 15-minute consultation with Simon. Sessions cost £60 and will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis; to purchase and book a session, please email Ink Academy on email@example.com.
About your tutor:
Simon Winder knows better than almost anyone the ins and outs of the publishing world. As a Publishing Director at Penguin Random House with over twenty years’ experience, he understands intimately the complex machinery underpinning the industry, the trends and fluctuations and the constants that remain the same. As editor to numerous high-profile authors, including Catherine Merridale, Dominic Sandbrook, Pankaj Mishra and Sir Ian Kershaw, he knows how to bring out the very best in a writer. And as a bestselling published author himself – his books include The Man Who Saved Britain, Germania and Danubia, which was longlisted for the Samuel Johnson Prize – he understands the various pitfalls a writer can make, and how best to avoid them.
