The Course In Detail

As we tailor every course personally to the particular writer, each creative writing course is different; it is tailored explicitly to you and what you want to write and achieve.

However, we base all the courses on the same underlying course structure:

  • 1 one-hour introductory session, where you will discuss with your tutor where you are in the writing process, where you want to be, what you want to achieve over the course and how it can be best structured to suit you, your book and your availability.
  • 8 one-hour tutorial sessions in which you will discuss up to 5,000 words per session. All sessions will be one-to-one and face-to-face, preferably in person but also possible by video call. You will have your own personal tutor, who will be invested in your work and will help you hone and develop your writing skills in relation to your specific work.
  • 6 months between the introductory session and the final tutorial session, with all sessions in between arranged flexibly around your life.
  • 1 Group Workshop is also included in the price.

How To Apply

Unlike group creative writing courses, which are governed by fixed ‘term’ times, we take applications to our courses all year round. We ask that you provide a brief sample of your work (1,000 – 3,000 words). We assess your submission to ascertain whether we think you’ll benefit from our course. This has got nothing to do with whether you’re ‘good enough’ – it’s just to check that we are the right people to help you write your book.

The Creative Writing Course costs £1800 upfront and covers 9 hours of one-to-one meetings with your own professional editor-tutor, who will read, edit and discuss with you up to 43,000 words of your own writing, as well as your overall project.

We recommend that the Creative Writing Course is carried out in person, if you are able to travel to Central London. For those of you who are not, we offer courses remotely via video call – though where possible we suggest carrying out at least the first session face-to-face (see our FAQs for why). If you would like to find out more about doing your consultation remotely, please email enquiries@inkacademy.co.uk.

One-Off Consultation

If you’re not sure you want to commit to the full course, you can purchase the introductory session separately for £200.

The One-Off Consultation is an hour-long, one-to-one and face-to-face discussion with a personal tutor at which you will discuss your written submission, as well as where you are in the writing process and where you want to be, if relevant. The tutor will advise you on how you can continue writing on your own.

This also makes a great gift for any budding writers in your life who need the impetus to get writing.

We strongly recommend that One-Off Consultations are carried out in person, if you are able to travel to Central London. However, if you would like to find out more about doing your consultation remotely, please email enquiries@inkacademy.co.uk.

Group Workshops

Group workshops are a chance to meet other writers and benefit from peer review of your work. Ink Academy believes strongly that creative writing can only be taught one-to-one as every writer is different; however, some writers find it beneficial to have an opportunity for complementary group workshops. By sharing your work with a small, supportive group of fellow writers, under the guidance of a tutor, you can benefit from their encouragement and feedback, as well as learning from your own ability to critique and appreciate others’ works-in-progress.

Places of the Group Workshops are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.  There is no limit on the number of Group Workshops you can apply to during your enrolment on the Ink Academy Writing Course but please note that if you attend more than one, you will not necessarily encounter the same attendees as before.

Group Workshops are only available to those enrolled on the Ink Academy Writing Course. A Group Workshop is a tutor-led discussion of the attendees’ work. Each attendee will provide up to 3,000 words up to a week in advance of the Group Workshop. For a workshop to benefit everyone involved, all attendees must have read and thought about – and be prepared to give considered feedback on – the other attendees’ work in advance of the workshop.

All students enrolled on an Ink Academy Group Workshop must understand and agree to adhere to our Terms and Conditions.
